Two types of morning glory cover summer balcony

morning_glory_pink_skyline_balcony

The colors of these two morning glories depend on the sky and change during the day. They are always contrasting: pink and violet, red and blue. Flowering for less than a day, their impermanence adds to their charm.

Fall is best in Yoyogi Park. A harp and some groovy dudes echo fall foliage.

A closer view of decorative grass on Tokyo balcony

The color and movement of this grass growing in a small flowerpot are very enjoyable.

Sunflower blooms next to the road, outside the gardener’s property

This sunflower is blooming in a tiny mound of dirt outside a neighbor’s house. I love how she maintains this corner and always offers some seasonal color to the passers-by.

Red edged grass adds compact color and movement in wind

In a narrow ceramic flowerpot, this red edged grass provides color and movement with the wind. It’s one of my favorite plants this summer.

A small vase brings color inside

I made this “bizen”, wood-fired vase at Kuge Crafts. The deep blue flower is called rindo (リンドウ) in Japanese.

It’s a small jungle in summer on my Tokyo balcony garden

In summer, lush foliage dominates my balcony garden. The morning glory curtain continues to bloom facing the sun, but inside there’s a cacophony of leaf shape and color tone, including olive, fig, and camellia. With so much new growth, you can hardly see the narrow wood path.

The top two photos face west and east. The lowest photo also faces east, and shows the layering of shoulder high and knee high plants. The grass plant in the white ceramic has some red leaves, which make a dynamic accent to the many shades of green.

Succulents on top of the air conditioner look good in heat of summer

The balcony summer hotspot is the air conditioner, almost always on and blowing hot air. This summer, I’m enjoying succulents which seem fine on top, but probably not in front, of the a/c. They have fun colors, shapes, and even textures. The ceramics were made at Kuge Crafts.

Marigolds provide spots of color in hand-made ceramics

These were some of the first ceramic flowerpots I made at my in-laws studio, Kuge Crafts. Here I’ve added some bright yellow and orange marigolds that I picked up at the nearby supermarket for 100 yen each. The ceramic are thick and heavy, which makes them ideal for a sometimes windy location. And the white glaze makes them easy to match with different flowers and herbs.

Which hydrangea do you like best? I love all types.

IMG_0818

I love all types of hydrangea. They are always so oversized, and particularly well suited to Japan’s rainy season. I like the elegant ones that bloom more sparingly, and also the giant pom pom types that come in so many different shades. Recently we saw hydrangea planted on the border of small rice fields in Izu.

I appreciate camellias for their indestructible and garish winter color

condensation_window_camellia_nakano_home

Camellias can be seen everywhere during Tokyo’s winter.

I am not a fan of winter, so I particularly appreciate camellia’s for proving indestructible color in bright pink on the coldest days. Whether pruned into a hedge, or placed in a plastic container, camellias are resilient to snow and require minimal care. The neighbor’s camellia has turned into a 5 meter tall tree.

Bright red flower is super saturated on balcony

seroshi_closeup_balcony_flower

This celosia flower (セロシ in Japanese) is so saturated that the color seems unreal. I also like how its leaves have red veins. Here’s what it looks like in portrait view.

White daisies and small grass on balcony garden

daisy_parkinglot_nakano_bal

These white and yellow daisies are still blooming on my balcony garden. The parking lot is 10 floors down. I’ve combined the daisies with a small grass for contrast. I like the color and texture of this film photo.

What a color! An ugly view of river in Shiba below the freeway

Is there anything alive in this river? Cutting through Shiba in Minato-ku, it’s covered by the Shuto freeway and cut off from the street with a chain link fence. What a color!

Pink flowers provide pop of color on balcony jungle

These dry pink flowers last for weeks and weeks. I forgot the name already, but I like this type of flower that provides a pop of color against the many types of green leaves in the garden.
