White echinacea on balcony railing offers subtle garden glamour

white_echinacea_balcony

I like flowers that are not so showy. This white echinacea draws attention and fits perfectly in a balcony railing mix of potted plants and vines.

This Edo morning glory is white with pink veins

Taken in mid-summer. This is the end of the summer balcony detail series.

Melting snow and white camellias in four season garden

camelia_meltedsnow_ishii_nakano

Ishii-san’s garden nearby always look good, in all seasons. With the snow melting, a family enjoys walking down the street.

Plum blossoms on pedestrian path give off intoxicating scent

plum_blossoms_nakano

On a cold overcast day, these white plum blossoms provide a thick sweet fragrance. It reminded me of narcissus and early spring, although we’re still in mid-winter.

Four season Nakano garden under snow

snow_iishi_nakano

Ishii-san’s garden is interesting in every season. Here it sits under heavy snowfall. His white camellias survived and were still flowering when the snow melted.

Winter palm and white camellia cover Tokyo residence

palm_camellia_koenji

I love this winter scene of rampant white camellia and tall native palms, with plenty of dead fronds still attached to the crown. The wild landscape makes the house cozy and bright in the cold weather.

White daisies and small grass on balcony garden

daisy_parkinglot_nakano_bal

These white and yellow daisies are still blooming on my balcony garden. The parking lot is 10 floors down. I’ve combined the daisies with a small grass for contrast. I like the color and texture of this film photo.

Balloon vine is a fun summer climber

On the long walk from Kyodo station to Nodai (Tokyo University of Agriculture), there’s a house and large garden where the residents are always gardening. This year they created a huge, two meter high trellis of fusenkazura The name is literally balloon kudzu, and despite looking delicate, it’s very hardy. The vine produces lots of white flowers, followed by a multitude of green balls that then turn orange. This year, I’m growing two specimens on our balcony.

Summer hydrangea spills white flowers from side street onto main road

I love this late blooming summer hydrangea with white flowers spilling from the side street onto the main road near our place. It’s called “Oakleaf hydrangea” or kashiwaba ajisai in Japanese. It’s native to hardwood forests in the southeastern United States. In addition to distinctive leaves, it’s one of the few hydrangeas with cone-shaped flower bunches. Maybe built-up Tokyo reminds this bush of its native forest.

Pink and white azaleas shine in spring rainfall

Azaleas bring back memories of the East Coast in the US, particularly the mid-Atlantic region where I grew up.

White pansies have bloomed all winter in kintsugi ceramic

I love this white pansy and the beautiful kintsugi pot that my friend Matthew made at Shiho ceramic studio. Kintsugi is a technique for repairing broken pottery, and involves painting the cracked lines in gold or silver. They’re have been many continuous flowers for months, even though I never added soil or any nutrients to the store-bought filler plant. Very satisfying and cheerful.
